Spring: check the exact water.

Spring stocking is an important part of New Jersey trout fishing, but closures and special-regulation stretches mean one date does not fit every river. Read the current rules for the section you intend to fish.

Summer: put cold water first.

Heat can make catch-and-release fishing harder on trout. Conditions may call for a different location, casting practice away from trout, or postponing a trip. A calendar opening alone does not make a trout outing suitable.

Fall: enjoy it thoughtfully.

Cooler weather creates another opportunity to get outside, but water levels and spawning activity still matter. Avoid disturbing spawning fish and their habitat. Ask your guide how the planned outing accounts for the conditions.
